The BEST Mongolian Beef Recipe

We love re-creating our favorite takeout recipes like Chow Mein and Fried Rice. This Chinese restaurant inspired Mongolian Beef is so EASY to make and tastes just as amazing as P.F. Chang’s. Thinly sliced beef seared until crispy with carrots, bell pepper, and green onion in a sweet and spicy sauce that adds so much flavor to the beef.

Slices of beef with vegetables in a sauce over tice in a plate topped with green onion and sesame seed.

How to Make Mongolian Beef-

This recipe comes together quickly and is best when served fresh. This recipe cooks fast so make sure all of the ingredients are measured and prepped before starting the recipe.

  1. CUT MEAT – Slice the beef into thin slices across the grain. TIP: Freeze the meat for 30 minutes so it’s easier to achieve even, thin slices.
  2. VEGETABLES – Julienne the carrot and pepper, slice the green onions.

Ingredients for Mongolian Beef in ramekins sliced and sauce ingredients measured out.

  1. COAT MEAT – Add cornstarch to the beef slices and completely coat (the cornstarch adds a crispiness to the meat as it’s cooked and at the same acts as a tenderizer for the meat).
  2. SAUCE – In a bowl, whisk together all of the ingredients for the sauce and set aside.
  3. SAUTE VEGGIES – Saute vegetables to your desired doneness. Remove from the skillet and cover to keep warm.
  4. COOK MEAT – Cook the beef until it’s crispy and has a good sear (don’t overcook the meat). TIP: Don’t overcrowd the pan, if needed, cook in batches. Add the vegetables back to the beef.
  5. SAUCE – Pour in the sauce and add the green onion, turn the heat down to medium. Cook until sauce thickens. TIP: Add additional Sriracha for more heat in the sauce.

Commonly Asked Questions for Mongolian Beef:

  • What to serve with Mongolian Beef – This beef recipe is perfect to serve over a bed of our fluffy white rice.
  • How long can you keep this recipe? The Mongolian Beef is great for meal prep because it will keep well refrigerated for up to three days. This is also a great recipe to use as meal prep and keep in individual portions to take to work and reheat for lunch.
  • What is the best cut for a Mongolian Beef recipe? Flank steak is best for the recipe. However, you can easily use top sirloin or top round steak as a substitute with great results.
  • Can I leave out the vegetables? Authentic Mongolian Beef is made with extra green onion. You can easily leave out the carrot and pepper, however, we love the extra flavor the veggies give the beef.

This was delicious! Definitely a big win for my hubby and me. I served it over rice ramen noodles with French green beans as a side, and we had enough left overs for another meal. I added 50% more to the sauce recipe, and swapped out the brown sugar for maple syrup as we are trying to stay away from processed sugars, and it was SO yummy. I will definitely be making this again soon!

This recipe was delicious! My 18 year old grandson and sister agreed! I had to use ground ginger as I had no fresh, and tapatío hot sauce instead of sriracha. Added a little bit of Swiss chard. Will definitely make this again.

There is nothing not to love about this recipe, especially for my completely addicted to Asian food family! With the financial effect covid has had on our budget, we could no longer afford our monthly outings to P.F. Changs for our family dinner night. I prepared this for them for an early evening meal today, and if the looks of happiness and the very best kind of shock on their faces is any indication, they will be clamoring for this way more than once a month!!!! As a Mother and food lover, this ticked off every single box that I have for a healthy, tasty, quick, and minimal clean up recipe. I just found this site for recipes, and I can promise you that this great new resource is going to be utilized at length, most of all before I ever buy groceries so I can put some delicious and fun recipes on our meal plan for the week. I served this over some Basmati rice which was a definite home-run for us, and a green salad with some seasame & ginger dressing and a little sprinkle of fried wontons on top. Thank you so much for sharing these with us!!!!

There is only one problem with this recipe. When we print out recipes from this site the print is so small I have to use a magnifying glass to be able to read it. It’s really a pain. I wish we could have the option for larger print for those of us with poor eye sight. Natasha, please consider this suggestion. Thank you.

From the first time I tried this, it’s been my second favorite food, which is saying A LOT. It’s amaaaazing. We’d tried a few other Mongolian recipes and this one is by far the best. My son prefers chicken for everything, so we’ve made it as chicken, and it’s still unbelievable. I dont usually like ginger, but I dont taste it in this, so it’s okay. We hardly ever use recipes as they are… we always make adjustments… but this one is already SO fabulous that we dont need to! We’ve made it a bunch of times over the last year or so. We just made it for the first time in the last couple months, and it was so good that I just felt like crying! Ahhhh thank you SO much!

I like the vegetables and beef to stay crispy so I remove the veggies to the bowl with the beef, then add the sauce to the pan. When it thickens I add the veggies and beef back in, toss a few times, and serve.

I don’t like soy sauce so I substituted ponzu sauce with only 1/4 cup brown sugar and it was amazing 🙂

My hubby is a big fan of homemade stir fries and we both agree this is the best yet, plus it’s easy and quick to prepare. I forgot to mix the cornstarch with the meat so I added it at the end, mixing with a small amount of water, so it wouldn’t get lumpy. I also added broccoli florets and topped it with a sprinkle of sesame seeds. This is a keeper!

This is the best one I’ve made at home! I’ve been trying to match the Mama Fu’s one and this one isnt quite as good, but is still delicious! We used chicken and it still worked great. My main focus was the sauce anyways, and it was wonderfully flavorful without being overpowering. My 13 year old went back for THIRDS. I do usually eat rice, but I thought this was so good on it’s own that I didnt even need that. Definitely a win, and we will make this again for sure! (with beef next time!)

Wow! Excellent recipe! I just made it today and we all enjoyed it very much! I did it with 2lbs of ribeye steaks and used 2/3c of soy sauce and 1/3 of siracha to compensate for the extra pound of beef. I made a mistake with the green onion and read thinly sliced instead of thickly, but it was absolutely delicious nonetheless! Tomorrow I will be making your Beef Stroganoff for dinner! So excited!

Did you use Sriracha sauce or a dry Sriracha seasoning?
AND when will you be doing a cookbook? I need one out by Christmas so my husband can get me one

I really liked the recipe but had a problem with a meat sticking the the bottom of a dutch oven while frying. Did you have the same problem? What kind of skillet would you advise to use for it? Thanks

Hi Jessica, A dutch oven isn’t truly non-stick. I would suggest using a non-stick pan if you are having trouble in a dutch oven.

Natasha, I have to tell you, once again you have blown me out of the water with this recipe. Easy, as delicious, if not more as the restaurants and definitely will be making it again. I did have an issue though and it had nothing to do with the recipe, but probably my limited cooking skills, but my flank steaks pieces, even though very tasty, they were very chewy. Would that be because of my cooking, did I over cook or is there a specific way/direction to cut the meat? Please help, I know I will be making this recipe again, very soon. Love the flavors and the ease of making it.

Hi Marlen, make sure to cut the flank steak against the grain and also thinly slice. It helps to slice thinly if you freeze the steak for 30 minutes before slicing. I hope that helps.

I’m making this again today it’s so delicious, the whole family loved it. Last time I made this and when I coated the steak with the corn flour it went quite mushy when I was frying it, what am I doing wrong? It still ended up really tasty though and we loved it.
