Iced Coffee with Condensed Milk Recipe

Iced coffee with condensed milk in a mason jar with a straw and cupcakes in the background

This recipe makes 1 Gallon of Iced Coffee Concentrate. You can easily double everything if you’re serving a large crowd. By the way, this is an awesome party drink on a hot summer day (or even if it’s just a little warm out, you should go ahead and make a batch).

I took my jug of coffee to my parents house for Sunday lunch and my creative sister Alla added a little extra condensed milk and poured it into a blender to make an amazing coffee frappe. Yeah it’s seriously awesome. It’s just as good (maybe a little a lot better) as the stuff in coffee shops that are $4-$5 a cup.

Be your own barista and offer iced or blended (don’t forget to put out a tip jar!). We love having this iced coffee concentrate in the fridge; it’s so easy to make an amazing iced coffee on the go!

Ingredients for Perfect Iced Coffee:

1/2 lb Ground Coffee (~3 1/4 cups)
8 cups Boiling Water
8 cups Ice Cold Water
1 Can Sweetened Condensed Milk

What You’ll Need:

Either a large french press or a fine mesh sieve with 6 layers of cheese cloth

Iced Coffee-12

How To Make Iced Coffee with Condensed Milk:

1. Pour ground coffee in a large heat proof bowl or pot. Add in 8 cups boiling hot water. Stir to get all of the coffee grounds wet then let it sit 5 minutes. (Note: if grinding your own coffee, don’t grind it too fine or it will go right through your cheese cloth).

Three photos of ground coffee in a bowl with ingredients being added to the bowls

2. If you have a french press, put it through the press in a couple batches, otherwise, Place the colander over a clean, heat proof bowl or jug and line the sieve with 6 layers of cheesecloth (this will catch the stray coffee grounds)

Two photos one of a strainer and one of the coffee being strained

3. After the coffee is all strained, discard the coffee grounds and add in 8 cups ice cold water to the coffee. Refrigerate until ready to use. This concentrate lasts 3 weeks to a month in the fridge (it will likely be consumed long before that, but just in case you’re wondering).

Iced Coffee-7

4. To serve, fill a tall glass or mason jar almost to the top with ice. Pour your coffee concentrate to the top of the ice. Add 1-2 Tbsp sweetened condensed milk depending on how much of a sweet tooth you’ve got. I thought it was perfect with 1 1/2 Tbsp. Stir with a spoon until the condensed milk is well incorporated (it tends to sink to the bottom). Add a straw and drink it on a hammock in the shade. 🙂

Oh yeah… I just don’t think you could really over-do it with condensed milk (It’s just as good as nutella; there I said it).

Hi, Coffee filters filter very slowly and it’s tricky figuring out what to set them in unless you have the right size colander where the grounds won’t spill over the side. If you are very patient, you can make it work with coffee filters.

        Hello –
I’m wondering why you can’t add the condensed milk to the whole batch. Seems like it would be easier if serving at a brunch it it were ready to drink. And I know 3-stars is a low rating but I find it misleading when people rate things as 5-Star when they haven’t tried it.
        Thanks

Hi Sue, everyone has a different preference for sweetness; some love their coffee black, some love it super sweet and some love just a drop of sweetness. This is why we let people mix in as much as they desire.

As amazing as this recipe was, I was disappointed when I got towards the end of my pitcher of coffee. I would shake it every day when I used it and at the end there was this thick black powdered residue that made the coffee taste horrible. Almost like a smoke taste. I gagged as I tried the last cup and had to just dump the rest out. I followed the recipe to the “t” as they say. And the first few cups were great. Anyone experience something like this?

Hi Alexandra, a little bit of sediment is pretty typical for coffee drinks. I would suggest not stirring and when you get to the last 1/2 cup of liquid or so, discard what is left with the sediment. If you are seeing a ton of sediment, that is not normal and maybe try adding an extra couple of layers of cheesecloth to make sure too much sediment isn’t getting through. I hope that helps for next time!

This is expected and very normal for any coffee recipe like this. There’s really no way around it. Your better off not shaking it and let it settle and discard the last little bit at the end. Just the way it works.

Hi Natasha! Oh my, I have been trying to make a good iced coffee for years, tried cold press, tried hot coffee, and they were all failures so decided to try your recipe and I’m glad I did!!
It’s perfect. I didn’t have espresso on hand so used French Vanilla medium roast with the 1-1/2 tbsp sweetened condensed milk and it was delicious. My husband and I had two cups each hahaha.
I’m trying to figure it out since like you we like the sweetness of 1-1/2 tbsp condensed milk,if I could add it right to the pitcher of coffee instead of each cup individually? Would I add the whole can (300ml) What do you think?

Awesome. I always order Vietnamese coffee when I have a craving for a good pho and broth.

I noticed you adapted this recipe from the pioneer woman and steamy kitchen.

The cheesecloth you could easily get from most dollarstores, and some decent ground coffee from Costco (Kirkland). This is great for making a large batch of coffee for guests during the hot summer months without busting a budget while getting praise (well, the praise is your recipe I would say).

But I wonder if getting a Vietnamese coffee filter set for personal consumption may be better for the long run. Anyway, I’m thinking of adding just a tad bit of whipping cream on top.

Rima’s idea of adding a shot of Bailey’s is also inspiring…

    Thank you Natasha

This is a perfect base for coffee lovers. Used 10 oz cup of ice and filled all the empty space in it with your coffee concentrate. Dumped everything in the blender, added 1 Tbsp of condensed milk, 1 scoop of vanilla bean ice cream and a dash of organic vanilla extract. The rest was done by my Vitamix. So easy!
As for the taste, this is much better and pleasing for my taste buds than that slimy, xantan gum filled Frappuccino sold nationwide.

It’s so simple and you only have one cup to wash after;)

    My favourite iced coffee recipe

10 to 12 cups drip coffee(more coffee, less sweet product. Also good made with hazlenut coffee)
1can sweetened condensed milk. (don’t forget to carefully pour a little hot coffee into the SCM can after you empty it out; that way you get every drop!)
1 heaping tablespoon hot chocolate mix
    2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Mix all together in a pitcher, let cool at room temp, chill overnight. Serve straight or over ice. A shot of baily’s, or Tia Maria, or Kaluha if you like. My husband likes a little hazlenut liquor on occasion.

I don’t know if it will be strong enough. If you are going to use a coffee maker, use the “strong” setting if you have one. I think this is best outside of a coffee maker, but I guess it can be done 🙂

    Hi Natasha!

I just happened to stumble across your website while looking for ways to use up leftover sweetened condensed milk. I’m a HUGE iced coffee lover and was hoping to find something regarding this and that and was thrilled to see this! I make my own iced coffee at home and even though I don’t use a french press, I just use a regular coffee maker and just brew the coffee extra strong. 🙂 I’m wondering though, I’m not a milk drinker. I don’t like the taste of it at all. But, I’m assuming the coffee would hide the milky taste?

Anyways, I can’t wait to try this! Perhaps I will tomorrow!! 🙂

Oh the coffee maker sounds like an easy way to do it! I wish mine had an extra strong setting. Do you mean you don’t like the taste of condensed milk?

Started making iced coffee last year, and have my first batch for the summer in the fridge right now. I’ve only made Ree’s recipe , but I will try yours next. This might be a little excessive , but I also add chocolate syrup and half and half to mine. Yummy!! I’ve also used some of the coffee and made ice cubes. If I get really adventurous I blend the coffee with a few ice cubes and make a frozen drink. Add the syrup, half and half and condensed milk and you have a frappacino.

Have you tried to add the condensed milk earlier in the process? So that it mixes in better?

You could if you want to; add it in a half glass of coffee then add the ice.

It would work, but I don’t think it would taste as good. Maybe as a last resort if the store ran out of coffee. lol.

You need a coffee grinder and grind it to a medium grind; not too fine.

Another great idea I found on-line(to go with the iced coffee) to make some coffee ice cubes! That way it doesn’t deluit the coffee when it melts! Or you could just pour milk over the frozen coffee iced cubes, condensed milk(of coarse:)) and blend it! Yum! Love iced coffee! Gotta try your recipe! And homemade is tastier and lighter in the wallet too:)

Whoever loves anything and everything WHITE CHOCOLATE at Starbucks here’s a surprise…it’s sweetened condensed milk with some additives. Believe me I know, my sister ordered a jug of white chocolate online and we read the ingredients. So save your pocket money and add as much of your “white chocolate” as you want at home without paying those extra 80 cents or so for an extra pump. Plus, its a much healthier choice cause your excluding all those additives. I’m a coffee addict as well so I’m always looking for ways to save money and drink healthier cause with coffee prices these days, one can afford a whole vacation at the end of the year just buy making their own cup of joe everyday, rather than buying it from the coffee shop. EnJoY!

Iced coffee makes my heart flutter! Yum! I have a batch of Ree’s iced coffee in my fridge right now but I’ll definitely give your recipe a whirl. I like that it has less ‘wait’ time, for those moments where you can’t wait 8 hours for a cup of iced coffee. 😉

Trader Joes makes a great organic sweetened condensed milk in a sqeezable bottle which tastes great in iced coffee. The only 2 ingredients are milk, and cane sugar.
