Velvety Blueberry Smoothie Recipe

As part of our “healthier new year” goal, we’ve been blending daily smoothies in leau of a meal (usually instead of breakfast). It’s weird how this blueberry smoothie can keep you feeling full and satisfied all while giving you some serious feel good energy.

Since we welcomed our Blendtec Blender into the family, we’ve been experimenting with smoothies almost daily and we’ll be sharing all of our favorites with you. What makes this purple smoothie fantastic? I’m glad you asked. Well, first of all, it’s purple. Secondly, blueberries are a powerhouse of antioxidants.

They are known for their ninja-like ability to fight off free radicals. We also used almond milk and if you haven’t tried it, go on and give it a whirl. Trust me my peeps, it makes the smoothie velvety and adds a subtle nutty appeal. The almond milk also has Calcium, Vit E and Vit D. Most importantly this blueberry smoothie is deeee-licious.

Blueberry Smoothie Ingredients:

1 cup original almond milk (or water)
1 Tbsp chia seeds (did you know these are like a dieters dream food because they make you feel full?)
1 banana, peeled
2 oranges (or 3 clementines), peeled
2 cups frozen blueberries

Purple Smoothie

How to make blueberry smoothies: (Are you ready for this?)

1. Add everything to the blender in the order listed (1 cup almond milk, 1 Tbsp chia seeds or 1 Tbsp of flex seeds, 1 banana, 2 oranges, and 2 cups froz blueberries) and whirl to the desired consistency. If using a Blendtec, push the smoothie button and watch it go! Serve right away (if using chia seeds, it will thicken as it stands).

Thanks for sharing, Natasha! At my house, we use the same recipe actually, except we put in other types of berries as well, not only blueberries. In addition, instead of the chia seeds, we put in walnuts. They give a creamy texture, an AWESOME flavor…and nuts don’t always taste the best unless they’re blended in with something else. In this case, you’ll be able to get the vitamins & minerals needed from nuts, while also having a tasty, well-balanced drink! Highly recommend this recipe!! Cheers!!! 😋🍹

Just made this and irreligious but a bit chucky, did I not blend of long enough of is that the way it’s supposed to be? I think it’s Chia seeds & pull from the oranges that I’m chewing on

Hi Teresa, it could be a couple of things – a higher-powered blender is able to process things smoother than a standard blender. Also, if you add too much-frozen ingredients, it can get overly thick and difficult to blend. I hope that helps.

The texture of smoothies is a problem for some….could you freeze it and serve as “ice-cream”?

Hi Cindy, I think that would work to make it into a type of ice cream or even popsicles! What a fun idea!

I looove smoothies! I’d like to try this, but without the banana. Ever since I was little, I’ve absolutely hated bananas. Yeah, I’m weird. I make a spinach-berry-greek yogurt-flax seed smoothie every morning. I’ve never tried chia seeds, but they’re on my list now! I just found your blog, and I’m so happy I did. Your recipes are amazing and I can see the joy and devotion to your faith and your family in every post. How refreshing! You’ve made me a fan for life!

My daughter, Larissa, made this and encouraged me to try…..tasted hers, loved it and the next day made it for my husband and me. We’re hooked because it is delicious with no added sweeteners plus healthy benefits from all the ingredients. I threw in a small amount of almonds because I used coconut milk, and 1/2 tsp. of vanilla. I have a Nutribullet to pulverize it all into a great smoothie.

Natasha, do you notice a little bit of bitterness using chia seeds? I tried chia seeds in my smoothies but could taste the bitterness, so i switched to flax seeds, but will give chia seeds another try. I have been making smoothies every morning since i got my blender for Christmas.

I’ve never been able to taste chia seeds. They are basically flavorless. I wonder if it was something besides the chia? How much do you add to your smoothies?

    Hi Natasha,

I’ve been following your site since early 2010, it’s amazing how far its come, great job!
Just wanted to thank you for all your great recipes. I didn’t have any reliable family to pass on their cooking skills from the motherland, great thanks is owed to you and the existence of your site that im able to provide my family with some delicious meals.

As i’m reading this post and demolishing the last third of a costco size hummus container, getting some kicks from the cola-smothie comparison, am remembering I LOVE SMOOTHIES!, all this juicin-smothin-diet talk is making me realize I don’t own a blender, can’t go on, anymore, drifting by those frozen berries at the store. So, for those of us who can’t afford a supa-lux blender, what would you suggest as a moderate substitute? Thanks!

The motherland, lol. Thank you so much! It’s awesome to hear from folks that have ben following the blog as long as I have ;). I am just filled with warm fuzzies right now. To answer your question, a good moderate substitute is the Ninja blender. It has the highest ratings on consumer reports and it is reasonable. If you do go with a spendier blender, you won’t regret the decision. I love my blendtec so much I could hug it daily and seriously we blend smoothies daily now whereas we did not before when we had a Cuisinart blender. My sister and mom both have Ninja and I and another sister have Blendtecs.

The only way I have tried using coconut and almond flavor milk is in my butter cream for cakes or cup cakes. Before I’ve used plain water or dry milk product in hi-ratio shortening but then I discovered Blue Dimond milk and it sure gave velvety flavorful taste to it. I am sticking with it now.

You could use regular milk or even water. We like the nuttiness and extra taste it adds and it has some nutrients that milk doesn’t. It’s also great for folks who can’t drink milk.

There’s a huge difference between the two! Soda has zero nutritional value where this has loads of antioxidants, vitamins and minerals and this is all natural sugar rather than empty calories. I’d take this over a soda any day. And it just make you feel good, whereas a soda,… Well you know 😉

You are so right about that, Natasha!!! Why even the comparison to coke? I used to drink coke, now I’ve cut way back, not because I’m on some kind of a diet, but just because after drinking it, it makes me more thirsty, doesn’t satisfy me at all. We’ve got nothing against it, we’ll still have some with pizza/burgers. I’d take plain water over it anyday though. Or smoothies. The possibilities are endless with the smoothies. I’d love to try with almond milk one day.

We used to drink soda too and we’ve cut it out almost completely… we splurge at parties 😉 I love that there are so many fizzy drinks on the market now that taste even better than soda and still have the fizzy appeal. 🙂

Fruit is naturally high in sugar, but good sugars. Having this right before bed time probably isn’t ideal, that’s why she mentions breakfast, however you could say having an apple is like drinking a can of coke. I still say apple is healthier. It contains NATURAL sugars.
