Horseradish Sauce Recipe

This creamy Horseradish Sauce rivals the best Steakhouse horseradish I’ve tried in both Ruth’s Chris and the Cottonwood Grill. It is excellent paired with prime rib, steak or beef tenderloin.

Horseradish Sauce Recipe:

This horseradish cream sauce is so easy and will impress your dinner guests! It keeps well in the refrigerator for at least 2 weeks and only gets better as the flavors meld.

This sauce is creamy and balanced by the cider vinegar. It isn’t overly pungent and won’t mask the flavors of the excellent prime rib you’ve prepared. If you like your horseradish sauce a little more potent, add horseradish to taste.

What is Prepared Horseradish?

You can purchase jars labeled “prepared horseradish” in the refrigerated section of your grocery store.

If you have a fresh horseradish root growing in your yard, you can make homemade prepared horseradish in a food processor with some water, vinegar and salt but keep in mind homemade is twice as strong as store-bought so add it to taste.

Prepared horseradish is so versatile. We love it in crab salad, coleslaw and “Hron” (a Russian sauce with grated beets).

We’ve been using this for dinner with steaks every time! It’s the perfect compliment to steak and veggies. Thank you for this recipe. Make sure you listen when the recipe says drained horseradish! Or else it’ll be more “wet.” I like it thick 😍

Natasha – I just made your horseradish sauce for a Veterans’ Day dinner to go with the prime rib I made for my astonishing neighbor and his family … truly America’s finest. I’m not sure if they liked the prime rib or your sauce the most. They surely talked about your sauce more and confiscated it all when they went home lol. Thank you for helping me honor our distinguished Veterans!!!

Horseradish is part of a Passover Seder. It represents the bitterness of slavery that the Israelites suffered in Egypt for 400 years before God redeemed them through Moses. It is served on a Matzah cracker, and then again on a Matzah cracker with a sweet apple dish added to show that even the most bitter circumstances can be sweetened by the hope we have in God.

Hi Michelle, Thank you for that note. We do mention draining it to remove access liquid, but not straining it. To drain it you can place it in a small fine mesh colander and press out excess juice using the back of a spoon or a fork.

Sounds really good…although I haven’t tried it yet. I can see having some in my fridge though. If having salmon….all I have to do is add minced dill and maybe a little more Mayo (depending on the strength of the horseradish) and I’ve got a good dill sauce.

I just made this today in anticipation of Sunday’s Christmas dinner. I cut the recipe in half because there will be 5 of us at the table and I suspect only 2 of us will be adventureous enough to try it. I tasted it and while it was good felt it needed more horseradish, so I essentially doubled the amount. The extra TBL really hit the spot. This is delicious and I will be proud to serve it with the standing rib roast. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Jason, the recipe calls for “1 tsp” which is 1 teaspoon. It sounds like you added 3 times the amount of vinegar that is called for which would make it too vinegary. I hope you try it again. It’s a very popular recipe on our site.

I use Silver Spring fresh ground horseradish and it comes in distilled vinegar. I drain the horseradish and add a small amount of the jar vinegar to my sauce. It’s pretty strong acid-wise, but it tastes really good. I’d take Ms Kravchuk’s advice and cut the amount and give the white vinegar a whirl – you’re really just trying to add a touch of acid to the sauce (lemon would probably even work.)

I’m going to give this recipe with the apple cider vinegar a go tomorrow with prime rib 🙂 Happy Holidays!

Hello Luda, you’re welcome. In most grocery stores, horseradish is kept in the condiment aisle. Look for it in a jar or plastic container near relishes, mayo and pickles.

Ni Natasha, found a couple different brands at Walmart, but my husband didn’t approve. He likes to make his own, and recently ran out of home made horseradish. He says store bought takes bitter. Do you like the brand you get? I am on a mission

Hi Luda, the one we use works great. I hope you like it! I have found the refrigerated ones to be better and have better texture also.

Horseradish generally in cold section of store. Usually near sauerkraut or the cold pickles.
NEVER in the condiment isle, not the good ones anyway. GOLD HOT is the best.

I shop at my local Walmart and they have it in the refrigerated case above the sour cream and the cottage cheese usually on the top shelf.

Luda, our prepared horseradish is in the deli section of the grocery store in a refrigerator. Just ask a butcher or someone at the deli counter and they should know. It’s not in the condiment aisle.

Perfect sauce! The sauce went great with our thin sliced steak. I didn’t have chives so I added about 1/4 teaspoon of onion powder after I made half of the recipe. Thanks!

This sauce is yummy! I didn’t have Apple cider vinegar so I used distilled vinegar but still great. Reminds me the sauce that fancy markets have with their beef. Exactly what I wanted!

Delicious. I went a wee bit heavier with the horseradish b/c I like the heat, and I used lemon juice in place of the vinegar. It added some tartness and brightness. This is a nice way for me to have my horseradish with my beef (we had it with ribeye steaks) and not blow my head off.

Hi Robert, prepared horseradish is just finely grated horseradish. I found it in the refrigerated section of our grocery store. You might ask a grocery store employee where they keep it – it can be in weird spots (it’s next to the refrigerated sauerkraut, Mexican cheeses and raw tortillas in our store). I have a photo of it in the post (see the third photo from the top).

Love horseradish sauce especially with prime rib. I will be trying this recipe, it looks very good. My Russian grandma always added a little beet juice when she made her horseradish, I’m not sure why.

The best ever. I served this with prime rib at Christmas, & it was wonderful. My son said “I could just drink this, it’s so good.” There was none left at the end of the meal. In the past I would just wing it, this year i found your recipe, & now I keep it mixed up in my fridge, ready to go. I did add more horseradish.

I’ve just grated fresh horseradish from the garden (I’m not crying from the fumes, honestly), and combined it with lemon juice instead of the cider vinegar, and unsweetened Greek yoghurt, s&p, and a finely chopped habanada chilli. It tastes ace already so a few hours to mature should make it awesome for the roast beef tonight.

I’m sorry, but I might be the only one that didn’t like this recipe. The mayo taste came through along with the overpowering apple cider. Not sure why this received so many stars?–I would have gone with some lemon juice rather than the strong apple cider and skipped the mayo.

Hi Amy, I haven’t noticed the mayo overpowering. I wonder if maybe you used a different kind of horseradish (maybe a creamy horseradish sauce was used instead of a prepared horseradish that is called for in this recipe?). That could make all the difference.

I actually grate my own horseradish and then stop the sharpness process after seven minutes with apple cider vinegar, so did not add more. It’s the way my Dad always prepared it:)
