White Pizza Sauce (Quick & Easy)

This White Pizza Sauce is essentially an easy garlic alfredo. It comes together in about 5 minutes and is our family’s favorite over homemade Pizza Crust! You’ll be surprised how easy it is to make a batch of pizza sauce for your next pizza party and it keeps really well in the fridge.

The Best White Pizza Sauce!

Growing up, I remember my mother making the best white sauce for pizza and it’s no wonder this is the pizza sauce my kids request the most often. My children’s favorite pizza is a classic cheese pizza and this sauce is perfect because it has so much flavor with the garlic and parmesan that you don’t need anything but a generous layer of mozzarella cheese over it.

P.S. If you prefer a classic tomato sauce, try our homemade Red Sauce for Pizza.

What is White Pizza Sauce Made Of?

This recipe uses simple pantry and refrigerator staples and whipping up a batch couldn’t be easier. It is made of milk, salt, pepper, garlic, and parmesan cheese. The butter and flour serve to thicken the sauce and create a rich alfredo sauce. This recipe makes 1 1/2 cups of white sauce or enough for 4 (10-inch) pizzas.

Ingredients for white pizza sauce with milk, parmesan, garlic, butter, flour and seasonings

How to Make White Sauce for Pizza:

All you need is a saucepan and a whisk. This sauce comes together in just 5 minutes or less so have everything measured out and ready before turning on the stove.

  1. Melt butter in a pan on medium heat. Add flour and whisk 1-2 minutes (do not brown).
  2. Slowly add milk while whisking and stir until smooth, thick, and bubbly.
  3. Whisk in salt, pepper, and garlic.
  4. Add parmesan cheese and whisk 30 seconds. Remove from heat and stir until cheese melts.

Which Pizza Toppings are best with White Sauce?

I would say just about any toppings are delicious over a white sauce pizza, but our favorites include:

  • Cheese: shredded mozzarella, fresh mozzarella, parmesan
  • Meats: chicken, crispy bacon, ham, pancetta, pepperoni
  • Vegetables: artichoke, tomatoes, jalapenos, spinach, roasted garlic, banana peppers, black olives, fresh spinach, mushrooms, roasted bell peppers

How to Store Sauce:

To store, let the sauce cool to room temperature then transfer to a Tupperware or mason jar, cover, and refrigerate up to 5 days. The sauce will thicken more as it cools, but will still be creamy enough to easily spread over pizza dough. If you wish to thicken the sauce, you can rewarm slightly in the microwave just until spreadable.

Pro Tip: A cream sauce is best refrigerated and not frozen or separation may occur.

This is so much better than the white sauce in pizza chains and I hope it becomes a new favorite for you. It reminds me of creamy alfredo pasta!

White pizza sauce on a spoon and in mason jar
This White Pizza Sauce is essentially an easy garlic alfredo. It has simple ingredients and comes together in about 5 minutes. It is a family favorite and so much better than the white sauce in pizza chains.
Cook Time: 5 minutes
Total Time: 5 minutes

Ingredients

Servings: 8 people (makes 1 1/2 cups sauce)
  • 2 Tbsp unsalted butter
  • 2 Tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/4 cup milk, (2% or whole milk)
  • 1/4 tsp sea salt
  • 1/8 tsp black pepper
  • 2 garlic cloves, pressed or finely grated
  • 1/4 cup parmesan cheese, shredded

Instructions

  • Melt butter in a small saucepan over medium heat. Whisk in flour and continue whisking for 1-2 minutes (do not let it brown).
  • Slowly add milk, whisking constantly until smooth, thickened, and bubbly.
  • Whisk in 1/4 tsp salt, 1/8 tsp black pepper, and pressed garlic.
  • Add parmesan cheese and whisk another 30 seconds. Remove from heat and continue whisking just until cheese is melted and sauce is smooth then set aside to cool before using for pizza. Do not boil after adding cheese or sauce may curdle. Once cooled, cover and refrigerate up to 5 days.

Notes

Makes 1 1/2 cups of pizza sauce or enough for 4 (10-inch) pizzas.

Hi, I had some family over for dinner last nite. I made 3 pizzas & one I made with your white sauce. I had a difficult to thicken…added a little bit flour..so over 20 minutes, it finally thickened. Well, everyone’s favourite was your pizza with the white pizza sauce. Just delicious..will definitely be making more in the future. Thanks for such a great recipe.

My husband and I made your white pizza sauce for two sets of friends. We eat as healthy as possible so tweeked it by replacing regular milk with coconut/almond milk which worked out great! Otherwise, we followed your recipe but found we needed more spices added. So, the second time we made it we added 1 Tbsp italian seasoning and 1 Tbsp oregano- that made all the difference. Our friends said, it was sooo good! A WINNER!!!

I’ve made this recipe quite a few times because it’s so good!! I usually don’t have 2% milk, never have whole milk. I use half 1/2 and 1/2, and half 1% milk. This works just fine!! And always extra garlic!! Think I’ll try putting the garlic with the butter like someone suggested. And herbs with flour. Tastes so good on pizza, instead of red sauce all of the time!! Thanks, Natasha!!

WOW! I think our red sauce is taking a back seat to this sauce. It is easy and enough to make 2 or 3 medium sized pizzas. We made it as-is and topped with little mozzarella balls, mushrooms, spinach, left over chicken, and a little shredded mozzarella and parmesan.

Firstly, I hate raw garlic, so I added it to the butter and sauteed it a bit. 2nd, I added all my seasonings to the flour when I measured them out. Last but not least, I used 1/2 whipping cream and half milk. This stuff is fantastic! Thank you so much for the recipe! It is my new go to recipe for white sauce for whit pizza! Yummy!

This is by far best white sauce recipe out there. I added nutmeg, extra parmesan, a bit more milk to make it more creamy and teaspoon of grated truffles. Amazing flavour!

Hi there, this white sauce uses Parmesan cheese – you need freshly grated or shredded Parmesan cheese. If you don’t have freshly grated or shredded Parmesan cheese, you can substitute it with Gruyere cheese or shredded Mozzarella cheese although the flavor profile and texture will be different

Hi, I am not familiar with the processed cheese you are referring to so I can’t make that recommendation. You might google search to see what a good substitute is based on what you have available. Also, a powdered or grated parmesan would work also if you can find it, but I would use less since it is more compact.

Hello Natasha! I enjoy seeing your videos and recipes online! You go into detail with helpful pictures/videos and instructions for each recipe. My question is about the pizza dough. Can I roll out the dough rather than stretching out on my knuckles? The first ball of dough I stretched on my knuckles but the pizza dough got holes in it and became very thin. It was hard to do with my knuckles! I want to roll out the second ball of dough instead. I’m also going to try this recipe using whole wheat flour. The end results was delicious, chewy, cheesy crust/pizza!
    Thank you for any suggestions!

Rolling it out isn’t ideal because you can easily burst the bubbles that you want to stay inside the crust. You might watch some more tutorials online on how to roll it on the knuckles. I probably could have made that video portion longer.

Question: Mine came out really thick and was a little difficult to spread on the dough. Did I do something wrong or is it supposed to be very thick? Is there a way to thin it?

Hi Kelly, make sure to measure flour using a measuring spoon so you aren’t getting too much flour which can make it too thick. If it seems too thick after refrigeration, you can warm it in the microwave for 10-15 seconds for it to loosen and be easier to spread.

Hello Bianca, it sounds like a good idea however I haven’t personally tried that yet to advise. Please share with us how it goes if you do an experiment.

Just a question. Can I omit the salt and use salted butter, that’s what I have in my fridge right now.

Hi Scott, yes that would work fine, just add salt to taste if needed.

Would you use this leftover sauce on pasta? My child is going through a picky phase and eats pasta plain with Parmesan cheese

Can’t wait to try pizza dough. My husband is experimenting tonight. I’m taking the weekend off from all cooking and cleaning duties

Yummy! I made this for dinner tonight. We haven’t had a white sauce before. Usually tomato. It was so good and so easy to make. Thanks!
