We love special breakfasts for the weekends and holidays like Easter and Christmas morning. Some of our favorites are Crepes, my son’s favorite Eggs Benedict, classic Quiche Lorraine, and of course French Toast because it tastes like dessert for breakfast.
The Secret to the Best French Toast
Try this method once and it will become your go-to batter and method for cooking French Toast.
- Batter consistency – adding the extra egg yolks creates a thicker and richer batter that will cook up better and prevent soggy toast.
- Sautéing in hot butter crisps up the edges
- Oven-finished – transferring the toasts to a hot oven keeps the toasts warm for serving all at once, plus it sets the custard in the center. You’ll even see them puff up in the oven.

Ingredients
This recipe feeds a crowd and will make 8-10 slices (depending on the size of your bread slices). It’s also easy to cut the entire recipe in half for a smaller batch. Scroll down to the print-friendly recipe card to see the detailed ingredient list.
- Eggs – use 6 whole eggs and 2 yolks for a richer batter.
- Milk – any kind will work (see substitution ideas below)
- Salt – balance the sweetness
- Vanilla extract – or use bourbon, rum, or brandy for variety.
- Cinnamon – our favorite spice, but you can also add a pinch of nutmeg
- Honey – adds sweetness to the batter. You can also substitute it with sugar.
- Butter – use unsalted
- Bread – 1 lb of thick-sliced bread (see options below)
Best Bread for French Toast
You can use any thick-sliced bread. Sweet bread like Challah or Brioche are favorites, but a plain Texas toast also works great.
- Brioche bread – a buttery rich sweet bread that soaks up batter well
- Challah – a slightly sweet Jewish bread that’s similar to brioche with a high egg content making it ideal for soaking up the batter.
- Easter Bread – our raisin-studded sweetbread
- Texas Toast – convenient since it comes pre-sliced into thick slices.
- White Country Loaf – slice this up into 3/4″ thick pieces
- Sourdough – the spongy and sturdy texture is perfect for soaking up the custard without getting soggy.
Pro Tip for Bread: This recipe is the best way to use up bread that is a day old and a little dry. If time allows, set your bread slices out onto a wire rack to air dry for 1-2 hours before using.
How to Make French Toast
This is a simple breakfast to make. Watch the video above and you will be a pro in no time.
- Slice bread – into 3/4″-thick pieces and preheat the oven to 275˚F.
- Egg mixture – In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, yolks, milk, salt, vanilla, cinnamon, and honey until well blended. Transfer to a casserole dish.
- Preheat skillet – set a large cast-iron or heavy skillet over medium-low heat and melt in 2 Tbsp butter.
- Soak Toasts – just 30-40 seconds per side.
- Sautee French Toast – transfer to the hot buttered skillet and sautee 3-4 minutes per side until golden brown.
- Bake – transfer toasts to a baking sheet and keep them in a 275˚F oven while sauteeing the remaining toasts. Once all of the toasts are done, bake another 10-15 minutes to set the custard.
Common Questions:
Yes, follow the baking instructions for French Toast Casserole Here.
Any kind of milk (1%, 2%, or whole milk), half and half, or heavy cream will all work great. You can also use dairy-free milk such as coconut milk or almond milk.
To make it in the air fryer, spray the air fryer basket with nonstick spray. Place soaked toasts in a single layer and air fry at 400˚F for 8-9 minutes flipping halfway.
Croissant French Toast is the ultimate treat. Cut in half, then dip and sauté the same way as any other bread.
French toast dates way back to the Roman empire and was called pan dulcis – a bread soaked in a milk and egg mixture, then fried up. According to this source, it has since become popular in the United States as French Toast with the word French used as the verb “to French” or “to Slice.” So the naming of French Toast really means Sliced Toast.
How to Serve French Toast
Sometimes keeping it simple is best and we often just serve it with maple syrup and butter. If you really want to make it more interesting, try our Bacon Pecan Caramel French Toast for a fun way to change up your breakfast routine.
- Powdered sugar
- Honey Butter
- Berries – strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, etc.
- Whipped cream
- Sliced bananas and Caramel Sauce
- Homemade Strawberry Sauce
- Baked Bacon – sweet toast and salty bacon is irresistible
Pro Tip: For Cinnamon Sugar French Toast, combine 1/4 cup sugar + 1/2 tsp cinnamon and sprinkle over your warm toast.
Make-Ahead
- To Refrigerate: Allow the cooked toast to cool completely to room temperature then store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3-5 days.
- Freezing: Arrange cooked and cooled toasts on a baking sheet and freeze for 2 hours then transfer to a freezer-safe bag for easier storage. Thaw in the microwave for 45-60 seconds, or thaw in the refrigerator overnight
- To Reheat: warm on a skillet, or in the air fryer or toaster until hot.
This French Toast Recipe is the perfect breakfast. It’s easy, tasty, and perfectly cooked every time. It also reheats so well – you’ll hope for leftovers.

Easy French Toast Recipe
Ingredients
- 6 large eggs
- 2 large egg yolks
- 1 cup whole milk
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1 Tbsp warm honey
- 1 lb bread such as Challah, Brioche, or Texas Toast, (about 8-10, 3/4”-thick slices)
- 3 Tbsp unsalted butter, to saute toasts
Instructions
- Slice your bread about 3/4" thick, and arrage on a wire rack for 1-2 hours if time permits to dry out the bread slightly. Preheat the oven to 275˚F.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together eggs, yolks, milk, salt, vanilla, cinnamon and warm honey until well blended and honey has dissolved. Pour into a casserole dish that fits 4 pieces of toast at a time, or as many as will fit your skillet at a time.
- Preheat your skillet over medium-low heat and melt in 2 Tbsp butter.
- Dip 4 pieces of bread into the egg mixture at a time and soak for 30-40 seconds per side depending on the thickness of the bread. Remove bread slices from egg wash letting excess drip back into the dish then place the bread slices into the hot skillet and sautee for 3-4 minutes per side until golden brown.
- Transfer to a baking sheet and place in the oven to keep warm at 275˚F. Repeat step 4 with remaining toasts, adding more butter as needed. Once all are sauteed, keep them in the oven for another 10-15 minutes for the custard center to fully set then serve warm with your favorite toppings.
Thank you! It’s a great idea to put it in the oven after frying. Thank you so much.
You’re welcome!
I’ve cooked it again today. I use lesser amount of liquids so not to use the oven, and with more sweetener. Sugar instead of honey. Thank u!
You’re welcome, hope you loved the results!

Yes! It’s a great way to keep it warm and there’s no wondering if the center is fully cooked through – It’s also nice to see them puff slightly in the oven.
my granddaughter is allergic to cow’s milk. Could you use almond or cotton milk??
Hi Anita, I have not tried a dairy-free substitution, but I bet that could work. If you experiment with a substitute, let me know how you liked the recipe.

I’m glad you love it! I haven’t tested that bread specifically, but I think it could work. If you experiment, let me know how you liked the recipe.

Hi Natasha!
I cooked it for Sunday breakfast first time and it was super! Super easy, super tasty and super beautifully breakfast dish! Special thanks for brioche bread suggestion.
Hi Tanya, good to know that you enjoyed it last Sunday and great job on your first try!
Growing up, my dad made an amazing French Toast recipe. I always looked forward to it as a kid. Sadly, he never shared his recipe with me and this is the recipe that comes the closest to what he made in terms of texture and flavor. His was just a lot more cinnamon-y. Definitely a keeper and so glad I’ll have this in my arsenal to make for my kids once they start eating more whole, solid foods. Especially since it makes such a large quantity and freezes well!
That is such a sweet memory to keep and I’m glad this recipe comes close to your dad’s version!
I want to make this tomorrow for Father’s Day, but I was wondering if I could use Panera Sourdough bread as it’s all I have at the moment.
We adore all of your recipes!!!
Hi Carol, I haven’t tested that bread specifically. I haven’t tested that but I think it could work. If you experiment, let me know how you liked the recipe.
YUM this recipe is the best french toast I’ve made by far! I will absolutely be making this again and again 🙂

Love to use this recipe for a Easter Brunch. I have a crowd of 12 people coming, can I make this recipe in the oven, or prepare the day before and heat in oven the day of. Please advise.
Hi Cathy, you may make this recipe ahead. Check out the Make-Ahead tips that I included in the recipe for some suggestions.
Let me preface this by saying that I don’t usually like French Toast. However, this recipe has made a French Toast lover out of me. If I could give it ten stars, I would. I think the extra time in the oven eliminates the “raw” egg taste that was my problem. I cut the recipe in half for just hubby and me, used brioche and it was perfect! My husband thanks you, Natasha, because now he will get French Toast again soon.
Wow, that’s awesome feedback. Thank you so much for your good comments and review, Judy. I’m so happy to know that you loved it!
I made this for Christmas Brunch!!!!!!!! It was so good. My grandson said it was the best French Toast he ever had!!!!
That is awesome feedback, thank you for sharing that with us!
Made this for Christmas brunch this morning for my fam. I’ve been making French toast for 25 years – this was the best batch I’ve ever made. Baking to finish the custard is an amazing innovation!
Wow, thank you for the awesome comments and feedback! I’m happy to know that you loved this recipe, Jeremy.

Do you ever take the beans out of the jar or just keep adding vodka as is runs low?
Hi Diane, we keep adding mode vodka as we use it up.
I didn’t mention what did you do to egg yolks.
Hi Tina, I added them in step 2.
I’m so excited to try this recipe! My first thought when buying the ingredients was to buy strawberries to make your strawberry cheesecake topping to pour on top 🤤
Oh that’s a great idea!! I hope you love this recipe, Donna!
Love this French Toast! Love your other tips especially how to make ahead and keep leftovers. In trying to figure out calories….. you give it 260 calories. I cannot find a serving size. Would that be for one or two slices of bread?
The serving size can be found at the beginning of the print-friendly recipe card (located at the bottom of the recipe post). The nutrition label shows counts “per serving.” Hope that helps!
Orange Zest and a little Orange Juice made a nice addition to the custard.
I’m in the process of making your Kulich right now and plan to bake some of it in a regular loaf pan to use for French Toast on Pascha morning. I’ve always used Kulich baked by one of the ladies at church before, but this year she was unable to make it.
Oh! Cheese Pascha makes a wonderful topping for Kulich French Toast.
A bit early, but, Christos Voskrese!
Thank you so much for sharing that with me, Joe! I’m so happy you enjoyed that.
You should try just a pinch of nutmeg in your mix……it just enhances the flavor of the toast.
That’s a great idea, Sylvia. Thank you for your suggestion!
Can you tell me which brand and where to get your maple syrup that you use in this recipe?
Hi Renee, we used this Raspberry Maple Syrup.
Do you have any recipe for Diabetes ?
Hi Shelby, I don’t have a category specifically for diabetes, I still advise consulting a nutritionist to be sure but here are my diet recipes that you can try.
Last night I made your brioche bread and it turned out perfect. Today I made french toast out of it and it was a hit! I’ll be making both again next time we have a family gathering. Tasty and so easy to make. Love your recipes and often browse the site when I don’t know what to make ☺️
Thank you and ‘behind the scenes crew’ for making it happen, lots of work goes into it I’m sure 💚

Hi Anagha, I haven’t tested that to advise, If you experiment, let me know how you liked the recipe.
it looks so good i will try it tommorow
I hope you love this recipe Jana!
Hi Natasha,
Did you change the recipe a little bit? Today I was making it and I feel that i making the same recipe but somehow on a different way. I remember 7 min in the oven… 🙂
Love all your recipes!!
Hi Andreana, I did improve it recently when we also shared a video tutorial. We reduced the temperature so it’s less risk of overbaking one batch while the second batch sautees on the stove.
Hi Natasha,
Is it possible to email me the old way of making the recipe or at least the temperature and for how long to bake ? I really like how they turn out fluffy and soft. I made the new recipe and they were a little bit dry.
Thank you !
Hello there, I only have this way of making french toast but feel free to experiment. Please share with us how it goes if you try and change some of the ingredients or process.
Tried it so yummy can you make wool roll bread
Thank you, Salma. I only have a recipe for Soft Dinner Rolls.

I made them today, we are 2 people and we ate half a loaf of bread because of them! They came out crispy and puffy, they were just perfect!!
I used less sugar and didn’t add cinnamon to the egg mixture, but i tossed them in sugar and cinnamon when i took them out of the oven, they were amazing! Thanks for the baking idea
I’m so happy you enjoyed that. Thank you for sharing that with us, Athina!
Наташа, Tous de Jour makes a loaf of bread that is the same as croissant, just in loaf form. Makes great French Toast.
That sounds heavenly delicious!
Muchachita Bonita
(With respect to you and your family)
I love your recipes and videos
I enjoy all of them.
Thanks a lot
Thank you for that nice compliment.
Hi Natasha! Is there anything that you suggest I can make with the extra egg custard mixture? I hate for it to go to waste and I have so much left over.
On a side note, I love all of your recipes and follow your blog religiously!!! 🙂
Hi Melissa, You can refrigerate it and use it the next day or make some extra and freeze the french toast. You can also make a small French Toast Casserole with it. In the future, it’s totally ok to cut this recipe in half if you want fewer toasts.
Make a lot extra and turn it into ice cream.
We love to have French Toast for dinner
Breakfast for dinner is always a great idea.
My whole family absolutely loved this French toast! It will be our weekend breakfast from now on. So easy and so delicious!
That’s just awesome! Thank you for sharing your wonderful review!

I hope you all love this recipe, Beth!
This french toast recipe is so EASY and so delicious! The whole family loves when I make this easy french toast recipe.
That’s just awesome! Thank you for sharing your wonderful review, Valentina!
May I use the thick regular french toast bread and add honey for the sweetness. If so this will be my Christmas Morning breakfast.
That sounds like it would work great!
I’m curious, is this something i can make ahead of time and freeze? At what point could I freeze? After frying or after baking?
Hello Lena, this French toast does freeze and reheat well. I would thaw frozen toasts before reheating them.
I often freeze French toast and it works out great.
Really great recipe, I love the use of vanilla and I love your recommendation on using a specific type of bread, it definitely makes it taste a lot better!
I’m so glad that was helpful, Brianna! Thank you for that awesome review.
Is this something i could cook today and bake in the oven the next day?
Honestly I haven’t tried baking the next day, Masha. If you experiment I would love to know how you like it!
If I don’t have honey could I replace it with brown sugar? Because my friend tried it and she said that it worked.
Hi Angela! That would be great to try! I’m all for trying to thins! Let me know how you like it!
This was my 2 time making this yummy delish French toast recipe and wow came out ten times better my dad was in total heaven he even gobbled down the 2 slices in a jiffy and he can be particular thanx so much Natasha dear your breakfast recipes totally rock just like all your others happy blessed Sunday cheers
What a sweet scene! Thank you for sharing that with us 🙂
Turned out fantastic! Thanks 🙂
Can you just use regular white sliced bread?
Yes that would work fine, but you might add a little sweetness to the mixture if desired since white bread doesn’t have the sweetness of the sweet breads.
Forgot the honey but I think it was sweet enough instead added Israeli sea salt a pinch of nutmeg and a little cinnamon and sugar also vanilla extract the pure not the imitation first fried it in butter and a little oil then drained on plates and then popped them in the oven wow I must say gurl they give off a certain taste where it’s very yummm and super crispy gotta make it like this again thanx @ usual Natasha always adding more to my cooking and baking repoirtoire love it
I’m so happy you’re enjoying the recipes! 🙂
Ya ditto me 2 o actually made this @ my bff Ariella s house she just had a baby girl recently and is slowly regaining her strength 2 cook and bake so not I only did I end up cooking for me and her but also for her 11 and 3 4 year old daughter who came home from school early she really let me take over her kitchen tho I’m curious Natasha did u add the raisins before or after making the French toast
That’s so sweet of you to help your friend :). I put the raisins into the bread when I made the bread: https://natashaskitchen.com/2012/03/27/portuguese-easter-bread/
Oh k gotcha I’m sure raisins would give it major flavor
hi Natasha
My mom makes a similar recipe but we never baked them after sautéing. Does it make them more crispy on the outside? Thanks for the recipe…looks amazing!
Ira
It just insures that everything cooks through :).
These were delicious 🙂 I love the idea of putting them in the oven at the end.. gave me time to cut fruit & make scrambled eggs and still have warm French toast to go with it all, LOL. Great recipe, thank you!
I’m so glad you enjoyed it, and so true; it does buy you some time all while keeping the french toast warm and perfect when you’re ready for it 🙂
adding vanilla extract to the ingredients is also yummy =]
I agree Olga :).
have you ever been to Biscuits Cafe in Portland? (I’m not sure where you’re from)
I’d love the recipie to their french toast-By far the best ever tried!!! Nowhere on the net…(((
No I e never been there sorry. I’ll try to remember it if we are ever in that part of the world 🙂
Hi:] where do u buy challah bread?
We made our own for this recipe; see the Portuguese Easter bread link above 😉 I think Challah is sold in nicer supermarkets and Some European stores. I don’t recall ever seeing it at Winco or Walmart.
Just had a thought! With the extra paski around why not make bread pudding? It’s already sweet AND has raisins already in it..I already started with some baguette I had lying around, wish I woulda used the paski though since I still have a loaf n it getting stale..
That’s a great idea! I’ve never tried that before, but why not? 😉
This is what I’m having tomorrow morning!
Sweet! Happy Easter morning!
Ohhh… yum, I can’t wait until Easter… Looks realy good 🙂
Thanks Inessa! 🙂
Looks amazing!!! Gotta give it a try 🙂 Thanks for all you do Natasha.
