What is a Dutch Apple Pie?

Dutch Apple Pie is essentially a crumb topped apple pie. We use a traditional butter crust to line the pie plate, fill with apples like you would for classic Apple Pie, and top with a buttery crumb-pecan topping.

The Best Apples for Baking:

We highly recommend using Granny Smith Apples for most apple desserts. The contrast of the tangy apples with the sweetness of the filling is irresistible. While Granny Smith works best, you can substitute. Be sure to use a crisp/tart apple that is not overly ripe.

If you are using sweeter apples, I suggest squeezing some fresh lemon juice over your apple slices to balance the sweetness and cutting down on the sugar in the filling. You can Substitute with: Jonagold, Braeburn, Pink Lady, or Honey Crisp.

How To Slice Apples: You can peel, core, and slice the apples by hand with a knife, but the fastest and easiest way is to use an Apple Slicer. It does all of the prep in one step. Watch the video tutorial above to see this in action.

How to Make Apple Crumb Pie:

A Dutch apple pie sounds fancy but the process is simple and you will impress everyone with your stunning pie.

  1. Make the Crust – roll a chilled pie disk and transfer it to a pie pan.
  2. Prep ApplesPeel, core and slice the apples. Toss with cinnamon.
  3. Make the Filling – in a saucepan, melt butter and whisk in flour then add sugar, and water. Stir sauce into sliced apples.
  4. Make Crumb Topping – using your hands, form pea-sized crumbles from flour, brown and granulated sugar, cinnamon, salt, and butter then add pecans.
  5. Assemble and Bake – pour the apple filling over the bottom crust, smooth out the top and cover with crumb topping. Bake at 375˚F for 55 minutes.

How to Make a Crumb Topping:

A crumb topping is simple to make and all you need are your hands to form the crumbs. Mix dry ingredients together, then work softened butter into the flour until well incorporated and coarse crumbs form, then fold in the pecans.

How to Transfer a Pie Crust:

The easiest way to transfer a pie crust is to wrap it around your rolling pin and then unroll it into your pie pan. Watch the video tutorial to see this process in action.

Common Questions:

Can I use a store-bought crust?

Absolutely! If the only thing stopping you from making this is the homemade pie crust, then buy a pre-made crust. If the crust is frozen, thaw according to package instructions and proceed with the recipe as usual.

Can I substitute the pecans?

You can leave out the pecans or replace them with chopped walnuts, sliced or slivered almonds.

How do I know when my pie is done?

The pie is done when you see bubbling juices at the edges coming through the topping. You can also check with an instant-read thermometer. Pectin breaks down and softens the apples at 175˚ so you want your pie filling to reach 175˚F.

How thick should the apples be sliced for pie?

For the apples to cook through evenly, cut your apples slices 1/4″ thick.

What is the best pie pan?

This recipe has a generous amount of filling so we recommend a deep-dish pie pan.

How to Serve Dutch Apple Pie:

Dutch apple pie is a show-stopping holiday dessert. If you want to make it even more decadent, serve it with:

  • Vanilla Ice Cream – scooped over each slice
  • Caramel Sauce – drizzled over the pie
  • Whipped Cream – lightly sweetened

Make-Ahead Tips:

We love to make and serve the pie the same day it is made but you can pre-make portions of the pie or even bake the entire apple pie with crumb topping ahead.

  • Pie Crust – The homemade pie dough can be made 2 days ahead and refrigerated until ready to use. You can even mold it in the pie pan ahead, cover, and refrigerate a day ahead.
  • Crumble Topping – you can make the topping a day ahead, cover, and refrigerate until ready to use.
  • Storing the Finished Pie – the pie can be baked, cooled, and refrigerated a day ahead. Bring the pie to room temperature or slightly warm it in the oven before serving.

Everything about this Dutch Apple Pie is good, from the flaky pastry dough to the warm gooey apple filling and crisp buttery pecan topping.

Dutch Apple pie is everything you love about classic apple pie with a crumb topping. Learn how to make a holiday-worthy Apple Crumb Pie.
Prep Time: 30 minutes
Cook Time: 1 hour
Resting Time: 1 hour
Total Time: 2 hours 30 minutes

Ingredients

Servings: 10 people

For the Dutch Apple Pie:

  • 1 pie crust , (1/2 of our pie dough recipe)
  • 2 1/4 lbs granny smith apples, 6 medium apples
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 8 Tbsp unsalted butter
  • 3 Tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 cup granulated sugar

For the Crumb Topping:

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 2 Tbsp granulated sugar
  • 1/4 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp Salt
  • 8 Tbsp unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 375˚F with a rack on the bottom and a rack in the center of the oven.
  • Roll out your chilled pie dough on a lightly floured surface to a 12” diameter circle. Transfer to a 9” pie pan. Tuck excess pie dough into the dish and crimp the edges.
  • Peel, core, and thinly slice apples to about 1/4” thickness. You should have 7 cups of sliced apples. Place them in a mixing bowl and stir in 1 tsp cinnamon.
  • Melt butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Whisk in 3 Tbsp flour then simmer for 1 minute, whisking constantly. Whisk in 1/4 cup water, 1 cup sugar and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and continue simmering for 3 minutes, whisking frequently then remove from heat. Pour the sauce over the apples and stir to coat the apple slices. Pour apples over bottom crust.
  • To Make the Crumb Topping, stir together dry ingredients: flour, sugars, cinnamon, and salt. Add butter and work it into the mixture with our hands until pea-size crumbs form throughout the mixture. Stir in pecans. Spread the crumb topping evenly over your apples
  • Bake uncovered at 375˚F for 50-60 minutes (we found 55 minutes to be perfect), or until the center of the pie registers 175˚F. Place a sheet of foil on the bottom rack to catch any drips from the pie. If topping is browning too much, cover with a sheet of foil. Remove from oven and cool 1 hour to allow the filling to set so it’s easier to slice.

This is the BEST Dutch Apple Pie I’ve ever made. I almost always make some type of changes to recipes. I tossed the apples with about 1 TBS of Lemon Juice before adding the Cinnamon. I also added 1/4 Cup of Sour Cream to the Apples which then needed a little more Flour in the butter mixture. I used about 3/4 + Cup Sugar (a little less than recipe) mixture of Sugar and Brown Sugar (mostly granulated sugar). I eliminated the Pecans (trying a little on one piece but prefer it with none).

EXCELLENT. Thank you so much. I know this would have still been 5* without any changes.

I plan to make your apple pie recipe for Thanksgiving and was comparing your lattice weave top crust recipe (Apple Pie Recipe with the Best Filling) to your Dutch Crumb top. Why do you bake the lattice crust at 425 for 15 mintues then reduce to 350 whereas the Dutch Crumb Top recipe bakes the pie at 350 the entire time?

Hi Lisa, thanks for your question. It also has a lot to do with the filling to ensure that is fully cooked through, there will be variations for different recipes. I recommend baking it as written and then making adjustments as you see fit with future attempts, to your liking.

This pie was delicious. I used less sugar (1/2 to 2/3 C.) I have a couple of questions, though. When I was whisking the sauce, the butter would separate from the flour. It still turned out wonderful, though. And the recipe calls for 8T butter, but the video looks like you are using just 4T or perhaps that’s the way the butter is packaged. At any rate – this pie is wonderful and I will make it again!

Hi Jen! Yes, if they are the same size you should be able to bake them together without making any changes to the time and temperature. You may need to rotate them half way through to ensure even baking for both pies. If they need a few extra minutes go ahead and leave them in a little while longer.

I just made this for my family for Sunday lunch. Served it with double cream. Wow! Not a crumb left – it was so delicious that everyone was quiet as a mouse whilst eating, which in our house is very unusual. At the end, I received a chorus of “scrumptious”, “best pie ever”, “to die for” etc.; and one very clean pie dish! Thought you should know that, Natasha – those words should be for you as it’s your recipe! 🙂

Very easy to make, wouldn’t change a thing. I would have used all granny smith apples but I only had two so had to use the bramley apples I had as well. The combination of the two was amazing. But next time will use all granny smiths.

Well done, Natasha! Your recipes always work and are full of flavour. I can see that you put a lot of work into what you do and I for one definitely appreciate it – you work hard.

Made this pie for Thanksgiving. Everything about the recipe is wonderful. I did tweek one ingredient. I used good quality apple juice for the water (Simply brand because I cannot get quality apple cider where I live now). I am not a fan of Granny Smith apples. That was what I could get so that was what I used. Pie was very good, but I broke down and ordered Northen Spy apples today from my home state of Michigan. Soon as they arrive, I will make the pie again. Natasha, I am 71 years old and my first memory of food is helping my mother can tomatoes at 4 years old. I made food my profession. I have many nieces and they often reach out to me for a recipe. I frequently send them to your site because you do it so well. They love the videos.

Had to rewrite this comment as the website reloaded just as i was about to click submit 😭 I’ve only made this recipe once before last year and it was a crowd pleaser! However my butter sauce came out clumpy this time. I followed instructions to a tee besides using half the sugar and maybe letting cook a 1-2 too long. I was whisking constantly. Do you know what could of caused that? I’m still going to use it in my pie, do you that’ll be fine? Thank you for all your lovely recipes! Happy Holidays!

Natasha, you mentioned the pie bakes up well if frozen in the comments. Can I make the pie and then freeze it uncooked? Or do you recommend baking, cooling and then freezing it? The recipe is amazing. I am out of town the next 5 days before thanksgiving and wanted to make it ahead so I can bake it fresh that day.

Hi Natasha…For Thangsgiving my granddaughter asked me to make her a Dutch Apple Pie. I came across your recipe so tried. Filling and topping were great. Now the crust! I knew I was going to have trouble with it and I did. Everything was very cold. I don’t have a blender so used my pastry cutter. The pastry was cracker like and hard. I tried to cut a piece and couldn’t get pie out of the dish. It was like glued to the bottom of the dish. As the pie baked there was a great deal of the sugar mixture on the bottom bubbling away. Maybe this caused it to glue to the dish bottom. I’ve always used my grandmother’s crisco recipe. This was a little different. HELP!

Hi Karen! I’m sorry to hear that. Sticking usually happens when there is a crack in the pie crust and the filling leaks out, baking between the crust and the pan. The hard crust could also have been a result of using too much flour or possibly the type of pan you used. Different pans distribute heat differently and can cause the crust to get too hard (over-cooked) or undercooked. Here is my amazon affiliate link to my pie dish. I recommend watching my tutorial on how I measure my ingredients. I hope that helps.

    Hello Natasha!

I’ve made your delicious apple pie recipe before and planning on making again for Thanksgiving. Is it possible to make the filling ahead of time and freeze it? Then thaw and bake a few days ahead?

    Thanks!

See my additional comment below…editing to add I *always* add cayenne pepper to my apple pies. In my opinion, it’s THE secret ingredient. Add a pinch to the filling mixture and also in the crumble topping.
Apples I used were some we picked locally – any crisp apple will do!

Fantastic! I made a few changes based off of what I had and some added flavor. Substituted: rolled oats in place of pecans, salted butter. Added to filling mixture on stovetop: Trader Joe’s bourbon vanilla extract 1tsp, grand mariner liquor 1tsp. Added to topping: sprinkle of butterscotch baking chips (just because I was wanted more chunk without having pecans on hand). Saving this one! Best apple pie I’ve ever had!

Our neighbors brought us a ton of apples from their trees so I made 2 of these today. They were my first homemade Dutch apple pies (my personal favorite) and it turned out delicious. I did use store bought crust for convenience and omitted the pecans because we didn’t have them but the recipe was easy enough for my 11 year old to follow along with and the end result was perfect. Definitely saving for future pies!

Hi Natasha, I made the Classic Apple Pie yesterday and it was a great hit!
Since I had extra green apples, I just tried making this Dutch Apple Pie, not sure how it will turn out as it’s still in the oven. I have 2 questions:
    1. In your recipe, first step is to have rack at the center and bottom of the oven. Why do we need another rack at the bottom? Can we do without?
    2. I couldn’t make the topping crumbly. It ends up more like a dough, is there a reason for that? I followed the recipe. Is there a way to “save” that? I spread the dough over the apple filling.

Hi, the bottom rack is for a sheet of foil but you could place the sheet directly under the pie also. It helps to catch any drips. It sounds like maybe you are overmixing the crumb topping. Watch the video to see what the texture should look like when you should stop mixing: “until pea-size crumbs form throughout the mixture.”

I had a small 9 in pie pan so I cut the filling in half & it was definitely more than enough. It worked out perfect though, delicious. I only needed half of the topping. Thanks for the great recipe!

This Thanksgiving I made my first ever pie using your pie crust and pumpkin pie recipes and both turned out perfect. The crust was good enough to eat by itself. For Christmas I used the second crust and made the Dutch Apple pie and again received glowing compliments from my family. I have used many of your recipes and now when I make something they all ask if it’s a recipe from Natasha. Thanks for making the pandemic bearable.

I’ve made this pie twice now. Once for Thanksgiving and once for Christmas. It’s hands down the best apple pie I’ve ever made. I consider myself to be a very high level baker. There’s nothing I can think of that would improve this pie. My family just raved about it. I’m was not a big lover of apple pie, but this converted me. Simply delicious and easy enough for a novice baker.

Hi. Thanks for the recipe. It was good and very easy to make. But… I don’t know what went wrong. Weither my baking dish was not deep enough or big enough or there were too many apples or too much sauce but the sauce went bubbling over and made a huge mess in my oven.

Hi Natalia, if the recipe was followed as written, then the most likely culprit was too small of a pie pan. Also, it’s always a good idea to place a sheet of foil under the pie dish to catch any drips, especially if using a smaller pan. You could adapt this recipe to a smaller pan by using less apples.

Hello Natasha! You are my first go-to when I want to make something 🙂

I made your pie crust for the first time instead of my usual frozen one and saved the other disk for Thanksgiving next week 😀

However, please help me understand what went wrong and what I should do for next week to make it perfect.
1- The filling turned out clumpy ( I followed your directions). So I made another batch and only cooked on low simmer the whole time and it turned out like the one on your video.
2- The crumbles turned out into a cookie consistency so I rolled and pulled it apart into pea size. It turned out like cookies topping and tasted great!
3- Even after letting the pie sit for 1 hour, the inside was soupy/runny. The apples stayed in shape but wondering why…the only water was the 1/4 cup in the filling. I did only have 5 medium sized Granny Smith apples instead of 6.

    Overall it was still yummyliscious!!!
And beautiful! Until I sliced it 🙁 Yet I want to make it again…so I hope you could help/advise me.

Thank you again for sharing your talents. I find your recipes much easier to follow than anyone else!

I have not experimented with that for this recipe. If you happen to test that I would love to know how you like this recipe.
