Where to Start?

The kitchen is probably the most important part of a home – it’s the most used and most useful space, but it’s also a place where people gather so you’ll want it to look presentable. Tackling kitchen organization can also be really daunting so we’re breaking this post into 3 parts:

  1. Kitchen (includes spice drawer)
  2. Pantry
  3. Refrigerator

Pick a space and give yourself time. Unless you can hire a professional team to come in and get it done in a day, it will take a week or even weeks and that’s ok. Take it one drawer at a time.

For inspiration, you can check out our videos below as well as create a Pinterest board of ideas or get yourself a book on organizing if you want (one with plenty of photos).

How to Organize Your Kitchen (step-by-step)

Every kitchen is different but here is a roadmap to getting organized. You can apply this to Kitchen, Pantry, and Refrigerator organization.

  1. Mark off cabinets and drawers with sticky notes to determine what goes where then work on one drawer at a time.
  2. Take everything out – empty the drawer or cabinet.
  3. Group things together – whisks together, spatulas together, etc.
  4. Get rid of things you don’t use – have a bag ready for donations or a garage sale. Things you hardly use but can’t part with, consider storing them in a different location so they aren’t taking up valuable space in your kitchen.
  5. Shopping – measure your space and buy drawer organizers, dividers, bins, containers, etc to maximize your space. You can find organizing tools at a container store, Spice it Your Way, Ikea or shop on Amazon.

Kitchen Organization Ideas

Watch our Kitchen Video Tour where I opened up drawers and cabinets so you can take a peek into how we organize our dream kitchen. We hired a pro to organize and now have it running like a well-oiled machine.

Our most recent organization project was our kitchen drawer which was inspired by Spice it Your Way, a small business owner who makes these beautiful spice jars and many other organizational containers. P.S. use code NATASHA10 to get 10% off your order. My spice drawer used to be a mess and now it’s gorgeous and so functional. I love that I can insert any measuring spoon into these jars, online the smallmouth spice jars I had previously. Watch the video and see the before and after.

Pantry Organization Ideas

Watch our Pantry Tour Video and see how we labeled and organized our pantry. You can apply these principles for any sized pantry, whether it’s a walk-in pantry or a modest closet-style pantry.

Refrigerator Organization Ideas

See our Refrigerator and Freezer Tour which includes tips for food storage that will keep your foods fresher for longer. The same step-by-step process applies to the refrigerator. Start by emptying the fridge and when you are getting rid of things, pay attention to expiration dates and discard anything that is expired.

Organized refrigerator stocked with food

Kitchen Organization definitely eliminates unnecessary stress and frustration when everything has its place and you know which drawer to open for everything from spices, to cooking tools, cookware, and even kitchen towels.

Getting the kids to put tools in the right spot once they come out of the dishwasher is a whole separate issue, but we’re training them up.

Hi Natasha! Just wondering how you like your spice jars? I am planning out my spice drawer and can’t decide if I want to go with round jars or with rectangle shape. I heard that the round ones “roll around” a bit when opening and closing the drawer. Just wondering if you had any advice. I LOVE the look of the round ones with the bamboo lids💕

Hi Colleen. I love my spice jars! You can use a spice drawer insert to keep them from rolling.

    Hello Natasha,

Absolutely love your new kitchen. I’m in the process of remodeling my kitchen. I am going to purchase a 48″ freestanding range. I see you have a Thermador dual fuel. I’m trying to decide on a dual fuel or all gas. Suggestions?

Hi Kim, I love dual fuel because a gas cooktop is my favorite while an electric oven seems to be the most reliable in terms of maintaining the right temperature.

Hi Natashas! Love your spice drawer makeover. What did you use to hold the spices up in the drawer, it looks tiered.

They are very cute and keep spices fresh, but how’d you figure out the expiration date for each?

Hi Majida, we use a marker and label the bottom of each jar with the expiration date 🙂
