Serve With

This hearty pasta dish is perfect to serve on its own, but we love to pair it with a fresh Caesar Salad or any of these sides:

Common Questions

What kind of shrimp can I use?

For the best results, you will want to use large fresh shrimp that are peeled and deveined. We love 21-25 count. You may also use frozen raw shrimp and thaw before using.

Can I use a different type of pasta?

You can substitute the penne pasta for any other pasta such as rigatoni, ziti, mostaccioli, and elbow pasta.

What type of cajun seasoning do I use?

You can use any of your favorite store bought cajun seasoning.

Can I add vegetables?

You can definitely add your favorite vegetable to the shrimp pasta. Onion, peppers, asparagus or green beans would all work great.

Why is my cajun sauce runny?

If your sauce is runny, then you did not simmer the sauce long enough. Also, make sure to use HEAVY whipping cream which has a higher fat content than regular whipping cream and don’t skip the parmesan cheese which helps thicken the sauce.

I hope this creamy Cajun Shrimp Pasta becomes a new family favorite for you.

Canjun shrimp pasta recipe served with parsley
Cajun Shrimp Pasta recipe that makes for the BEST pasta dinner that is ready in under 30 minutes! Buttery cajun shrimp in a creamy cajun sauce mixed with pasta. An easy pasta dish packed with so much flavor!
Prep Time: 5 minutes
Cook Time: 20 minutes
Total Time: 25 minutes

Ingredients

Servings: 6 servings
  • 8 oz penne pasta
  • 1 lb large shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • 1 Tbsp olive oil
  • 2 Tbsp cajun seasoning, divided *or added to taste depending on brand used.
  • 2 Tbsp unsalted butter
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1/2 cup diced tomatoes
  • 1 1/2 cups heavy whipping cream
  • 1/2 cup grated parmesan cheese, plus more to serve
  • 2 Tbsp parsley to garnish, (optional)

Instructions

  • Cook the penne pasta in a pot of salted water until al dente according to package instructions. Drain the water and cover the pasta to keep warm.
  • Coat the shrimp with 1 Tbsp of the cajun seasoning. In a deep skillet, heat 1 Tbsp oil over medium heat. Once hot, add the seasoned shrimp in a single layer and saute for about 1-2 minutes per side, or until the shrimp is no longer translucent, remove from skillet and cover to keep warm.
  • In the same skillet, melt 2 Tbsp butter with the minced garlic and cook 30 seconds until fragrant. Add in the diced tomatoes and saute for about 2-3 minutes.
  • Pour in the heavy whipping cream, remaining 1 Tbsp cajun seasoning and grated parmesan cheese. Bring to a simmer then reduce to medium/low heat and continue 2-3 minutes or until the sauce thickens.
  • Add the shrimp and pasta back into the skillet and stir until noodles are coated in sauce and everything is heated through. Garnish with chopped parsley if desired and serve.

Notes

*Different brands of cajun seasoning have varying amounts of salt. If your seasoning is saltier, start with half of the seasoning and add more to taste.

Hi Chrissi, not all of my family likes spicy as well and because of that I make my own cajun seasoning spice mix (lots recipes on internet) but without cayenne pepper and this way everyone gets full cajun seasoning taste and who prefers spicy can add spice to their plate. In my case nobody does because it tastes super yummy without it too. Thought I would share in case it will be helpful for somebody. Natasha’s recipes rock!

One of my favorite recipes on here. I recommend cooking the pasta al dente and then putting cold water on it while straining the water. This keeps the pasta from continuing to cook after it’s taken out of the water. The pasta will heat back up plenty with the sauce. Definitely use unsalted butter too, or it might be too salty.

I finally got around to trying this recipe and it was absolutely delicious. I love Indian food because of the spices and so this one with cajun was a real treat and a great introduction to some new flavors. I used a store bought Cajun seasoning that turned out very well. I added 2 more cloves of garlic as well, – (my preference). I served this after a starter and had I had more people to serve, it might have been quite short on quantity. I cooked everything as per instruction but when I went to add the pasta it looked like I would have too much pasta in relation to the quantity of shrimp, so I left out a full bowl full of pasta, which left me, what I felt, was a good mix of shrimp and pasta. I served only 2 people with this recipe + 1 small bowl of leftovers! We really chowed down on this though and the flavors were nice and exotic. 1 pound of shrimp I translated to be 20 good sized shrimp. I think it would be difficult to serve 6 people but for 2 hungry and appreciative adults it was super. Very very delicious.

I’m changing my review. Yesterday I posted the 2 Tablespoons of Tony Chachere’s is overwhelming salty and next time, I will cut down to 1/2 tsp divided. I reheated the pasta dish today for lunch and it was NOT nearly as salty tasting! I will still cut down the amount of Tony Chachere’s. I also noticed 1/4 tsp of Tony’y Chachere’s has Sodium 340 mg. I read the Badia Cajun seasoning has 80 mg sodium in 1/4tsp. Thank you Natasha for a exceptionally tasty recipie!

You can make your own Cajun seasoning fairly easily.
      2 tbs paprika
      2 tbs garlic powder
      2 tbs oregano
      1 tbs kosher salt
      1 tbs onion powder
      2 tsp ground pepper
      2 tsp cayanne
I pretty much had all these on hand.

Hi Nataha! This was great- so simple and easy. I made it to put on top of a couple of ribeye steaks and was going to put the rest on Fettuccini noodles for lunch the next day. I only had 1 fresh tomato, and didn’t have any canned regular diced tomatoes, so I used a half a can of diced tomatoes with green chilis and didn’t add the 2nd tbsp. of Cajun seasoning. Yum! Have made this twice in the last week. I prefer angel hair as it seems to help hang on to the sauce better. I use only 1T of Tony Chachere’s and it’s just right for us in terms of spice and salt. I also like to add the juice of 1 lemon as the sauce simmers to help it thicken. My Mom has already requested it for Mother’s Day. Thanks for the recipe! 😊

Can you use tomato paste instead of diced tomato (or does the diced tomato reduce down smooth)? I have a kid who hates tomato chunks in sauce. Sigh. Thank you!

I have kids who don’t like chunks in their spaghetti sauce etc. as well – when I make sauce I just run everything through the food processor at some point, then the problem is solved and they still get all the veggie goodness

Worked great! I’d say the shrimp had a little less flavor, but overall great if in a pinch.
Also need to add shrimp at the very end, otherwise the shrimp becomes rubbery.

Hi Tanya! So glad you enjoyed this recipe. For the best results, you will want to use large fresh or frozen raw shrimp that has been thawed. If you are using pre-cooked shrimp, it tends to get rubbery.

The flavors are good. Everything was great cooking technique and ratio-wise with the exception of Cajun Seasoning.. My comment is that Tony Chachere’s Cajun Seasoning is much too salty when using 2 tablespoons as called for in the recipe. I could tell the flavors of this would be GREAT had it not been so salty. I’m not salt averse at all either. I still think the recipe is great, just not for this particular Cajun Seasoning.

I will be making it again and adjusting by half. Looking forward to it.

Made this for lunch yesterday. Such a super easy recipe to follow and SO FAVLORFUL! I come from an Asian heritage, so we (occasionally) like a bit of a kick to our flavors, so I added a 2 tbsp of Cajun seasoning during marinating. It was DEVINE! I do like my sauces a little thicker … should I simply add more heavy cream or milk?

    • Natasha
      November 25, 2021

Hi Tally, you could add more heavy cream to increase the sauce and make it a little thicker, but adjust the seasoning to taste so it doesn’t get too bland with the addition of cream.

Unfortunately this was inedible because of the Cajun seasoning. We literally had to throw it away. We LOVE spice but this brand, Louisiana, was nothing but salt. Any suggestions on what to use next time would be greatly appreciated. My sauce also didn’t thicken but we can live with that if we can eat it.

Tried this recipe, and as it is, it is just OK at best. I ended up tripling the amount of cajun spice on the shrimp. After pouring in 1 cup of cream, I realized it was going to end up soupy. I only used the 1 cup cream, and still ended up thickening it when done. I didn’t have a full pack of linguine, so I also added Penny, half each. When I make this again, it will be penne only. When serving it to eat, it really lacked a cajun pizzazz. So I sprinkled more cajun seasoning on before eating

Did you boil the tomato, remove the skin and dice it? Or chop fresh tomatoes? Or use canned diced tomatoes?

AMAZING and EASY recipe!!! So glad I tried it. I did not have cajun seasoning but went to the store just so that I could try this recipe and so glad I did. It was done in less than 30 minutes and my husband and son kept raving about it. My husband even said this was a good dish to serve when we have family over.

Can we use a lower fat content cream? like 15 %? would that work too?

Hi Ted, I recommend reading the section in the recipe titled “Why is my cajun sauce runny?”. We recommend cream with a higher fat content than regular whipping cream.

Hi Natasha, why do some recipes have videos others don’t? 😊

Hi Ana, some recipes don’t really have videos. We can only do one video per week as of the moment.

What can I use instead of the Cajun seasoning. I can’t eat spicy.

I haven’t tried anything else to advise, also the substitutes that I know are also spicy it’s usually a mixture of paprika, garlic powder, italian seasoning etc..

Can I substitute chicken Natasha? Would i need to make any major changes?

Hi Lauren, you could totally cut the chicken breast in half into cutlets, season both sides and sautee until cooked through then transfer to a cutting board and cut against the grain into strips and add it to the pasta to make Cajun Chicken Pasta. Yum!

Yes! I have always found it’s easier than I think it will be to recreate a restaurant favorite, especially pasta!
