This has become our go-to flank steak recipe! The marinade is so easy and has just a few ingredients which give the flank steak incredible flavor. Pair this with homemade Chimichurri Sauce for an unforgettable steak dinner.

The Tabasco Chipotle sauce is the SECRET INGREDIENT here and really amps up the natural flavors of the steak, adding rich and smoky flavor to every bite. Big thank you to Tabasco for sponsoring this recipe!

The marinade we came up with is so simple and flavorful! This flank steak is delicious paired with cilantro lime rice, scrumptious in tacos, and brilliant for fajitas! Squeeze some fresh lime juice over the top and serve. Is your mouth watering yet?

We used a generous amount of the Tabasco Chipotle Sauce. It adds more smoky rich flavor and the heat is so subtle after grilling that even our kids approved! I also served the steak with a splash of fresh lime juice and more of the Tabasco Chipotle Sauce (which I loved even more than my favorite steak sauce!).

Servings: 4 to 6 as a main course
  • 2 lb flank steak
  • 4 Tbsp Tabasco Chipotle Sauce, plus more to serve
  • 1/3 bunch cilantro, about 1/2 cup loosely packed
  • 1/3 cup green onion, chopped
  • 1/3 cup olive oil
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1 Lime, cut into wedges to serve

Instructions

  • In the bowl of a blender or food processor, pulse together marinade ingredients: 1/2 cup cilantro, 1/4 cup chopped green onion, 1/3 cup olive oil, 4 Tbsp Tabasco Chipotle Sauce, 1/2 tsp black pepper. Blend until smooth.
  • Place steak in a non-reactive dish (glass or plastic) and cover all sides with marinade. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate 6 hours or preferably overnight. Remove from refrigerator 30 minutes prior to grilling.
  • Grill over Medium-high heat (450˚F) for 4 min per side for medium rare, or cook to desired doneness. To create the fancy grilling marks, rotate 45˚ after 2 minutes. Remove to a plate and let rest 10 to 15 minutes prior to cutting. Cut steak (against the grain) into thin strips and serve.

    Thanks

Hi Sharon, we have a note on that in the recipe. We grilled it on a Grill over Medium-high heat (450˚F).

This recipe is one of many I’ve made from your site! From the mango cake, the grape jelly meatballs, the meatloaf, to the general tso’s chicken, they never disappoint!
I just tweaked it a little by salting the steak and setting aside some sauce for dipping. It was delicious! Thank you for being my go-to for great delicious recipes!

    Hi there,
Can you cook this meat in a pan rather than grilling?
    Thank you for your response.

Hi Lisa, you could do it on a pan, preferably a heavy-bottomed pan for even heat distribution. Sear the steak over higher heat then reduce heat to medium and cook to desired doneness.

I’m one of the unfortunate 20% of the population for whom Cilantro hits the tastes buds like soap, so I subbed parsley and it turned out fabulous. I have also made in my cast iron skillet when the weather doesn’t allow me to grill, and both ways are fantastic. Thanks for another great recipe.

I don’t have a grill and am wondering if I could cook this flank steak in my Vortex air fryer/oven. The recipe sounds delicious. I fear if I cooked on stove top it would get too smoky in the house.

Hi Christine, steak in the air fryer works well because it doesn’t get smoky. It depends on the thickness of the steak and the desired doneness, but you could try air fry at 400˚F for 8-10 minutes, flipping halfway.

Made this today for Father’s Day. It was fantastic! The marinade was super spicy so I was worried it would be too hot, but it actually cooks up with great flavor and isn’t spicy when it’s done. My whole family loved it and we are definitely going to make it again. Thanks for the wonderful recipe!

Hi Mary, original Tabasco sauce is quite a bit more vinegary and salty so I think you could substitute but not straight across. I haven’t tested this particular recipe with original Tabasco but I would probably start with 1 Tbsp of original Tabasco sauce.

Hi Nancy, the Tabasco Chipotle is not very hot at all in terms of being a hot sauce. Once it’s grilled with the steak, it’s very subtle and even kid friendly. My son doesn’t go near anything spicy and he ate up his portion without any complaints :). You can serve it with brown rice, absolutely! 🙂

Hi Alley, a cast iron would work fine! Sear over med/high heat and continue cooking until desired doneness is reached. You might need to turn down the heat after initial searing so you don’t burn your steak before it’s done. Ideally you shouldn’t cover it in a pan or it will get steamy which will result in a dry steak.

The Chipotle one is definitely worth trying and works so well in this marinade! We also loved it served with the finished product instead of barbecue sauce. It’s a lot more mild than I thought it would be when I first tried it but it does have really good smoky flavor!
